BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026: Students and Teachers Stay Calm, Stay Safe
The alarm rang across Balangkayan Senior High School on the morning of June 18, 2026. It was not a signal for panic — it was a call to action. The BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026 had officially begun. OIC/School Principal II Ma’am Emma Abot led the activity. Meanwhile, DRRR Coordinator Sir Dionald Montes coordinated every step of the drill. Together, they guided the entire BSHS community — teachers and students alike — to execute the earthquake drill with calm, precision, and purpose.
Preparedness in Action: The BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026
The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire. As a result, it ranks among the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Because of this, regular earthquake drills are not just a school requirement — they are a life-saving practice. Therefore, Balangkayan Senior High School treats every drill as a serious simulation of a real emergency. Every teacher and student must know exactly what to do when the ground shakes.
This year’s drill ran in a disciplined and efficient manner. As the signal sounded, students in every classroom immediately performed the Drop, Cover, and Hold On procedure. This is the protocol that the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) recommends for earthquake response. After the shaking simulation ended, teachers led their students out of the classrooms. Together, they walked calmly to the designated assembly areas.

Meet the People Behind the Drill
A good drill does not happen by accident. It takes careful planning, clear coordination, and strong leadership. The BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026 succeeded because of two key people. Their roles were essential to the activity from beginning to end.
Ma’am Emma Abot
OIC / School Principal II
Ma’am Emma Abot serves as the OIC and School Principal II of Balangkayan Senior High School. She provided the leadership that made this earthquake drill possible. Her clear direction kept the drill safe and aligned with DepEd’s disaster preparedness standards. Furthermore, her presence throughout the activity gave both students and teachers the confidence to participate fully and calmly.
Sir Dionald Montes
DRRR Coordinator
Sir Dionald Montes serves as the school’s Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction Coordinator. He planned the drill sequence and briefed all teachers and students on the proper procedures. In addition, he coordinated the alarm signal and monitored the evacuation flow. After the drill, he evaluated the school’s overall response. His thorough preparation allowed the entire activity to run smoothly from start to finish.

Drop, Cover, and Hold On: The Three Steps That Save Lives
Every earthquake drill centers on one core procedure — Drop, Cover, and Hold On. This three-step response is simple. However, it saves lives. During the BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026, every student and teacher performed these steps right away. They did so the moment the alarm sounded, before moving on to the evacuation phase.
1 – DROP
Get down on your hands and knees immediately. This position protects you from being knocked down while still allowing you to move if needed.
2 – COVER
Cover your head and neck with your arms. If a sturdy desk or table is nearby, crawl underneath it. Stay away from windows and falling objects.
3 – HOLD ON
Hold on to your shelter until the shaking stops. If you are not under a table, hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.
What stood out during the BSHS drill was not just the correct execution of these steps — but how calm the students were while doing it. There was no chaos, no shouting, and no confusion. Teachers guided their classes with steady voices, and students responded with a level of composure that reflected weeks of prior classroom orientation and genuine preparedness awareness.
Calm, Orderly Evacuation: From Classroom to Assembly Area
After the simulated shaking stopped, the next critical phase of the BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026 began — the evacuation. On the signal from Sir Montes and their respective teachers, students formed orderly lines and exited their classrooms in a calm, controlled manner. They covered their heads with their arms or bags as they moved, avoiding hallway bottlenecks by following pre-designated evacuation routes posted in every classroom.
Within minutes, the entire student body had assembled at the designated safe zones on the school grounds. Teachers took roll call in their respective sections, accounting for every student before reporting to the principal. The speed and orderliness of the evacuation demonstrated that the BSHS community is not only aware of what to do in an earthquake — they are genuinely prepared to do it.
A standout moment of the drill was the visible calm maintained by both teachers and students throughout the entire exercise. In an actual emergency, panic is often more dangerous than the hazard itself. The composure displayed during the BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026 shows that Balangkayan Senior High School has built a culture of preparedness — not just a checklist of procedures.

Teachers as First Responders: The Role of Faculty in Disaster Drills
One often-overlooked aspect of school earthquake drills is the critical role played by teachers. In an actual earthquake, a teacher is the immediate authority in the room — responsible for the safety of every student under their supervision. During the BSHS Earthquake Drill 2026, teachers demonstrated exactly the kind of leadership their students needed.
Each teacher calmly directed students to perform the Drop, Cover, and Hold On procedure, maintained order during the evacuation phase, ensured no student was left behind, and conducted a headcount upon reaching the assembly area. Furthermore, teachers communicated with each other and with Sir Montes throughout the drill, ensuring that the entire exercise remained coordinated and safe.
This professional readiness among BSHS faculty is a direct result of DepEd’s ongoing teacher training on disaster preparedness — and it showed. While the students were calm, it was because their teachers were calm first.
